WEEK OF PRAYER AND FASTING

We will be entering a church-wide fast during the week of January 4th. During this time, we are inviting our church family to intentionally step away from food for set periods and devote that time to seeking God. We ask that everyone commit to fasting at least one full day—though you are welcome to fast more, even all seven days if you feel led. In addition to full days, you may also choose to fast a specific meal each day. We encourage you to spend time before Monday praying and considering what this week of prayer and fasting will look like for you personally.

To conclude our week of prayer and fasting, we will gather on the evening of Sunday, January 12th, for a Together Night. This will be a special time to break the fast and pray together as a church family. We will begin with a potluck-style supper at 5:30 PM, followed by worship and prayer.

We are so excited for this week and eagerly anticipate all that God is going to do!

WHAT IS FASTING?

Fasting is a spiritual discipline where we deliberately abstain or reduce our intake of physical gratification, most commonly food, to focus more on God.

"When you give up eating, don't put on a sad face like the hypocrites.

They make their faces look sad to show people they are giving up eating.

I tell you the truth, those hypocrites already have their full reward.

So when you give up eating, comb your hair and wash your face.

Then people will not know that you are giving up eating,

but your Father, whom you cannot see, will see you.

Your Father sees what is done in secret, and he will reward you."

Matthew 6:16-18

Why is Fasting IMportant?

When we fast, we are humbling ourselves before God to show Him that He is more important than earthly desires. Fasting empties us of the worlds influences to make more room for God. Fasting is also partnered with extra amounts of prayer to hear from God about a certain concern and/or petitioning God to move in a specific area of your life.

WHAT DO I FAST?

There are different kinds of fasts that can bring us closer to God. You can do one of these for the entire 7 days, do different fasts for different amounts of times, or do multiple types of fasts at the same time. We want you to pray and ask God what type of fasting you should do during this 7 day period.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF FASTS

-Complete Fast: Many times in the Bible, people completely abstain from any food for a certain amount of time, only drinking water.

-Partial Fast: You can also abstain from certain foods or food groups. For example, you may want to fast anything with sugar, or maybe you fast meat all together.

-Media Fast: In today's culture, technology takes up so much of our time. On top of abstaining from food, this may be a time to unplug as well and pray instead of spending time on social media or watching tv.

-Daniel Fast: In Daniel chapter 10, we see Daniel refrain from any pleasant foods (meat, bread, and sugar) to hear from God.
